A record amount of rain caused severe flash floods in southern Thailand over the weekend. Officials say nearly 2 million people are affected.

In the southern city of Hat Yai, residents waded through waist-high water or left on boats.

Thailand's Irrigation Department said the average rainfall in 10 southern provinces last week was recorded at 300 to 500 millimetres.

Local media reported difficulties with evacuation efforts in Hat Yai, as hundreds of residents and tourists were trapped inside homes and hotels by rising water.

Officials warned that water levels are likely to rise further in several southern provinces, as torrential rains in the region are expected to continue into Tuesday.
