Nobel laureate in Literature, Mo Yan, has brought his latest play, titled "Crocodile," to Hong Kong and expects it to serve as a gateway to the global stage. The writer expressed his desire for the story to act as a cautionary tale in the contemporary times. A crocodile that was swimming at Wanchai waterfront soon transformed into a flying dragon. Mo Yan's magic realism comes to life, presented through drones. The spectacle that charmed audience kickstarted the play running over the weekend in Hong Kong. Mo Yan uses the creature as a symbolic representation of human desire, illustrating that the smaller the environment provided for it, the less it can grow, which echoes with the notion that human desire can expand infinitely if left unchecked. Inspired by Mo Yan's experience as a journalist years ago, it tells the story of a corrupt Chinese official, portrayed by Taiwanese actor Zhao Wenxuan, who escaped to the U.S. with ill-gotten gains. He is the owner of the crocodile. Mo Yan remarked that the drama serves as a mirror, allowing everyone to reflect on their own soul. The play debuted in 2023 and toured mainland China before finally arriving in Hong Kong. Director Wang Keran noted despite the cultural differences between Hong Kong and mainland China, the show addresses universal themes of humanity, which makes it accessible and enjoyable for audiences worldwide. As an international cultural hub, Hong Kong provides the production team with a valuable platform to tap into global stages. The show has been toured in around 30 cities in mainland China for approximately 60 shows. Hong Kong is the last station for this season. They are bringing three shows.
