The Fire Services Department said its elderly residents' home safety visit programme will become a regular initiative, involving visiting households to distribute items for fire prevention.

They teamed up with volunteers from TVB to visit elderly residents in Ngau Tau Kok today to spread fire protection awareness.

At Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate this morning, Director of Fire Services Andy Yeung and Fire Services Department volunteers joined forces with TVB volunteers and visited elderly residents bearing three gifts for each household.

Known as the "Three Treasures of Fire Protection", each set of gifts consist of a fire blanket, an extinguisher and a standalone fire detector.

Yeung explained how to place the detector, noting that it can remain operational for a decade without replacing batteries.

This as the Fire Services Department began the trial for its elderly resident home visit programme last year in a bid to spread fire protection awareness.

Authorities said the trial has yielded positive results and decided to regularise the programme.

They hope to visit elderly households in ten residential blocks during the third quarter of next year.

Yeung added the programme aims to increase fire protection awareness and assess the fire safety conditions of households.

Meanwhile, the Fire Services Department recorded some 1,400 cases of fires over the first nine months of this year -- of which around 40 percent involved electrical appliances such as overheating laptops and portable chargers.
