The first Group of 20 summit to be held in Africa opened today with an ambitious agenda to make progress on solving problems afflicting the world's poorest nations.

Leaders and top officials from the richest economies came together near the famous Soweto township in South Africa, once home to Nelson Mandela.

Many of South Africa's priorities for the group, including a focus on climate change and its impact on developing countries, have met resistance from the United States.

President Donald Trump ordered a boycott over claims that South Africa is pursuing racist anti-white policies.

The G20 is a group of 21 members that includes 19 nations, the European Union and the African Union.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on members for "leadership and vision" in making global economy more inclusive and ending conflicts around the world.

"My message to G20 leaders over the next two days is simple," said Guterres. "Now is the time for leadership and vision. As the world's largest economies, the G20 can hold enormous influence to ease suffering, ensure that economic growth is widely shared, and set out our world on a better, more peaceful course for the future.

"The theme of this year's meeting -- Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability -- points the way. Over the next two days, I will call on G20 members to use their leverage to lead the action we need."
