Crossing the dunes: Inner Mongolia camel herds' winter migration

Herdsman in north China's Inner Mongolia have begun their centuries-old winter migration practices -- leading camel herds from the desert to warmer grazing grounds.
Early November, herders in Alxa Right Banner prepared days-long supplies and food before setting out from their villages and venturing deep across Badain Jaran Desert to round up the camels that have been roaming freely during the warmer months and guide them out before winter sets in.
Some herders say they track down the camels through their footprints -- and the herders are able to recognise each camel by the animals' facial markings.
