UK warns Russia over " spy ship" on edge of Scottish waters

The UK Defence Secretary says a Russian spy ship is on the edge of national waters and has issued a warning to Moscow.
This is a vessel designed for gathering intelligence and mapping our undersea cables. We deployed a Royal Navy frigate and RAF planes to monitor and track this vessel's every move, during which the Yantar directed lasers at our pilots", John Healey told a news conference.
"That Russian action is deeply dangerous and this is the second time this year that this ship, the Yantar, has deployed to UK waters. So my message to Russia and to Putin is this: "We see you, we know what you're doing, and if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready."
The European Union is planing to roll-out new defence measures to allow for quicker deployments of tanks and make it easier for troops to access airports, bridges and railways during emergencies.
Defence spending across the continent has doubled since Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas says: "It very much depends on us because weakness invites them to make their move. If we are making the steps on military mobility, on the defence readiness, increasing our defence expenditure, also production, everything, also our interoperability and cooperation between member states' defence industry that we talked about today, then Russia will not attack, because we are not weak.
