In fencing, Hong Kong's women's epee team fell short in the bronze-medal match, losing to Beijing to finish fourth at the National Games. At the Kai Tak Sports Arena, the three-day individual events wrapped up before team competition began. Hong Kong's women's epee squad featured Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan, Chu Ka-mong, Chan Wai-ling and Wu Haidi. Hong Kong beat Shandong in the quarterfinals, but were stopped by Fujian in the semifinals by a five-point margin, moving on to face Beijing for bronze. In the opening bout, Chu Ka-mong was listed as reserve while Hsieh Sin-yan -- fencing from the left -- took the lead role. After two probing exchanges, she landed the first hit on the third action. Hsieh, ranked world No. 4 in women's epee and fresh off an individual bronze earlier in the week, closed the first bout with a 4-2 lead for Hong Kong. Next came Wu Haidi against Beijing's Liu Chang. Wu controlled the tempo, taking the bout 3-0 to extend Hong Kong's score to 7-2. But Chan Wai-ling was unable to maintain the momentum, dropping the bout 3-5 to Xing Yao. Hong Kong still held a three-point cushion, but from that bout onwards the tide began to turn. Beijing continued to pull away. Hsieh anchored the ninth and final bout, delivering a fierce back-and-forth duel with Hsieh narrowly losing the round 12-13. Hong Kong fell 32-43 overall to Beijing, finishing the women's epee team event in fourth place. HK Fencer KAYLIN HSIEH: "We worked really, really hard. I have no words to describe, like every single time I am looking at my teammates they are drenched in sweat and they are pushing themselves to the limit that they have to prepare no only for this competition but for the new season as a whole. So I thank them for their hard work and I hope they can also remember the good things that happened today." The fencing events will conclude on Thursday with a total of 12 gold medals up for grabs.
