The Chief Executive in Council has approved the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to establish the city's third medical school. The two chairpersons of the working group preparing for the new medical school, Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau and Secretary for Education Christine Choi said that based on ten criteria, the applications submitted by HKUST, PolyU, and Baptist University were evaluated. HKUST was recommended as the best candidate to establish the third medical school, as it is believed to be able to achieve a synergistic innovation effect with the two existing medical schools. HKUST's proposal suggests a focus on training clinical doctors with research capabilities and recruiting second-degree students. HKUST will provide funds of HK$2 billion to build a medical school building in Clearwater Bay. The first batch of 50 medical students is expected to be enrolled in 2028, and the first batch of graduates expected to begin internships in 2032.
