The annual U.S.-China Hong Kong Forum kicked off on Monday.

The two-day event was launched at Aberdeen in the morning. On the first day, the forum discussed three issues: artificial intelligence, humanities and geopolitics and safety.

In a video address, Xie Feng, the Ambassador of China to the U.S., said China-U.S. relations had experienced "ups-and downs" this year.

But Xie said that the two nations' leaders managed to bring the relations forward with "strategic guidance."

"The Busan Summit is not the finishing line, but a new starting point," said Xie Feng, the Chinese Ambassador to the US. "China always keeps its words. We hope the U.S. side will work with us in the same direction and take concrete actions.

"It is important to avoid flip-flopping, causing any new disruption, or taking one step forward but then retreating half or even two steps backward."

Speaking of the elements that should be established in the China-U.S. relations, Christopher Nixon Cox, the grandson of the former U.S. president Richard Nixon, said trust is key.

"To rebuild that will take work," said Nixon Cox. "To rebuild that will take, through dialogues, unearthing areas where we do have common interests. Whether that's in how do we design the rules for the road for AI, whether that's finding a way for our businesses to work together so that the both countries can profit."

Another key speaker was Neil Bush, brother of the former U.S. president George W. Bush.

Bush said Trump administration's tariff measures are harmful to many.

"To weaponise tariffs against China and Canada and Mexico, and friends all over the world, it's a misinformed policy direction," said Bush. "It's predictable how he has behaved, but it's been very harmful to a global order that has served world so beautifully."

The U.S.-China Hong Kong Forum takes place under the theme of "Circles for Peace." About 50 representatives from sectors including politics and business attended the event.
