The Consumer Council's investigation found that all 11 driving schools across Hong Kong offer driving courses with practical training hours below the Transport Department's recommended 30 hours.

Starting in June, the Consumer Council reviewed all driving schools and the 32 private car and light goods vehicle courses they offer, with fees ranging from just over 7000 dollars to 20,000 dollars.

The longest course provides 27 hours and 45 minutes, which is more than 2 hours short of the department's recommendation.

The fewest practical hours are offered by the Hong Kong Island course at Hung Chun Driving School with only 10 hours.

These driving schools allow students to purchase additional lessons, priced from 315 dollars to 615 dollars per session.

To "add hours" to reach the department's recommended on-road time, the average total fee would rise to 26,000 dollars.

These packages also do not include car rental or administrative handling fees.

The Consumer Council reminds the public to choose carefully.
