Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is considering reviewing the country's long-standing Three Non-Nuclear Principles -- almost certain to draw backlash, according to Kyodo News. Last revised in 2022, Takaichi is mulling changing the third principle prohibiting nuclear weapons from entering Japan's territory. If revised, it is a significant shift in security policy and is certain to draw domestic and international backlash, the report said. The three principles of not possessing, not producing and not allowing nuclear weapons into Japanese territory were first declared in 1967. While Takaichi has no intention of revising the first two principles, she believes the third principle could hinder port calls by U.S. nuclear-armed vessels, the report said.
