UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce sweeping reforms to the country's asylum policy on Monday.

Reforms will include an extended waiting period to settlement for asylum seekers. Currently asylum seekers can become citizens after 5 years.

"We still believe very strongly, and I believe that we must provide sanctuary (to) those who are fleeing wars and danger and conflict abroad," said Mahmood. "We still want to be a country that does that. But at the moment, our system is particularly generous compared to other countries in Europe, where after five years, you're effectively automatically settled in this country."

"We will change that so that the status you get when your claim is granted and you're accepted as a refugee is for two and a half years, and which is renewable every two and a half years, and you're on a much longer path to permanent settlement in this country of 20 years."

"So that is changing the way that we look at refugee status and it is designed to prevent some of those pull factors."
