Beijing has reminded mainland citizens to avoid travelling to Japan in recent days owing to escalating tensions between the two countries.

While the China Maritime Safety Administration issued a navigational warning over ongoing live fire drills in the Yellow Sea.

This after Beijing criticised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for her recent comments on Taiwan as being provocative.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Friday raising concerns about the increased instability in Japanese society over the course of this year, resulting in several Chinese citizens having been injured in the country.

Mainland authorities have also reminded Chinese citizens currently based in Japan to increase their safety awareness.

Kyodo News said the measure could be aimed at targeting Japan's tourism sector.

According to sources by the Japan National Tourism Organisation, more than 7.4 million Chinese tourists visited the country between January and September of this year -- the highest figure among all countries.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Security Bureau said it has updated its amber outbound travel alert against Japan.
