Hong Kong's epee and sabre fencers took to the piste in front of a spirited home crowd. Some mainland spectators also noted the tournament's buzz added to the thrill of the matches. Pulsed with energy, the Kai Tak Sports Park Arena kicked off the six-day National Games fencing tournament. The opening day featured the women's epee and men's sabre individual events -- amid cheers and chants. Spectator PERCY: "We went to Paris to support the Hong Kong team during the Paris Olympics, and we hope that they will get good results this time as well, especially when the whole Games is being held in Hong Kong." Some spectators from Guangdong said the atmosphere at the Hong Kong fencing events is particularly electric. Foshan resident Ms. Chen travelled to Hong Kong for the fencing event because her son is learning the sport, saying that Hong Kong athletes' fencing techniques are quite impressive and the vibes are great. Ms. Wan here says the men's sabre event was so fast and the quick-paced thrills swept up the energy of the crowds. Among the spotlights of the day is 24-year-old Kaylin Hsieh, who claimed bronze at the women's epee individual event. Mr. Leung says he's the most impressed by how she fought point-for-point into a nail-biting final exchange before clinching an 11-10 victory on the decisive last hit. Fencing at the National Games has a total of 12 gold medals up for grabs, covering men's and women's team bouts and individual bouts in epee, foil and sabre.
