National Games track cycling kicks off as HK fans cheer riders at home track

The five-day National Games track cycling events kicked off in Hong Kong today, with cheers and adrenaline filling the Tseung Kwan O Velodrome.

Even though Team Hong Kong did not qualify in the first four group events, athletes say they will persevere for other upcoming races.

The Tseung Kwan O Velodrome, pulsed with energy.

Fans and spectators -- riveted by the races and captivated by the high-speed thrills.

Female cyclists of Team Hong Kong, donning lake-blue jerseys, were the first to hit the track.

Day one saw fierce races in the men's and women's team sprint and pursuit events.

Despite the home advantage, Hong Kong's squads couldn't break into the top eight in the qualifiers, bowing out early for the four events.

Even though the teams missed out on advancement, the audience's spirits remained high.

ATHENA LEUNG: "A bit disappointed, seeing them lose some matches. But I think Hong Kong athletes will do their best."

This student says it was a joy to see Ceci Lee struck gold for the road race event, and she came to cheer for local cyclists competing on home ground.

This sixth-grader from Hangzhou even took three days off from school to watch in person. She says the crowds here are rapturous.

Cyclist Jeff Yung says while they did not qualify for the events, the result was actually a personal best for him, and there's room for improvement, as he knows the riders can go even faster.

Cyclist KWAN TSZ-KWAN: "The atmosphere is very good. Many Hongkongers get in and see our competition. It fuels our power ourselves."

The track cycling event will conclude on Monday with a total of 14 gold medals up for grabs. The Hong Kong Team earlier said their goal is to notch four medals.

This year's track cycling events feature over 270 athletes from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao. 

Hong Kong has fielded nine men and nine women with road race gold medallist Ceci Lee poised to race in the Madison and Omnium events.
