An 11-month-old baby boy infected with influenza A died of complications after being hospitalised for more than two weeks. Since the influenza season began this summer, the city has logged 18 severe cases and two deaths, involving children. Before coming down with influenza A, the deceased 11-month-old baby boy had been hospitalised at Kwong Wah Hospital because of chronic illnesses. He had fever and cough since October 27th and was later transferred to the paediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he tested positive for influenza A (H3) and was later found to have severe pneumonia complications. This marks the second case of influenza-induced death involving a child this year. Health authorities urge schools and parents to arrange for seasonal flu vaccination for students or children, which can help reduce the risk of severe illness and mortality. Meanwhile, an 11-year-old boy studying at ESF Island School came down with influenza A on Wednesday after attending his school's camping activity last week. Apart from developing a fever and cough with phlegm on Friday, he had lightheadness on Monday and sought medical attention at a private hospital. The Centre for Health Protection sent staff to inspect the school and conduct medical surveillance. Seven of his classmates also tested positive for influenza A while displaying mild symptoms, but did not require hospitalisation.
