A 19 year-old woman was sentenced to a year in jail for promoting the so-called "Hong Kong Parliament" while in Canada. The group is deemed subversive by the government. She pleaded guilty to a count of sedition.

The sentencing took place at West Kowloon Law Courts.

Between March and May this year, defendant Lan Fei was said to have filmed two promotional videos for the so-called "Hong Kong Parliament" in Canada. The videos urged people to vote in polls through social media.

In court, Lan was revealed to be the ex-girlfriend of Tony Lam, a wanted fugitive of the Hong Kong authorities for his connection to the "Hong Kong Parliament."

On Thursday, Lan's barrister, Edward McGuinniety, said the defendant was willing to face her consequences despite holding being afraid of her sentencing. McGuinniety described Lan as "naive" and had strong emotional attachment to her ex-boyfriend, which was why she was not aware of her actions at the time would lead to such a serious offence.

Chief Magistrate, Victor So, said the case involved aggravating factors. He said Lan had clearly supported the so-called "Hong Kong Parliament," spreading remarks to slander China internationally.

So sentenced Lan to a year in jail, saying the case did not contain any mitigating factors apart from the fact that the defendant had pleaded guilty.
