An 11-year-old boy who had not received the flu vaccine contracted influenza A and developed shock, requiring hospitalization and is in serious condition. Doctors indicate that the flu virus remains active in Hong Kong and recommend early flu vaccination. The student, who studies at Island School, participated in a school camp last week. He developed a fever and cough with phlegm starting last Friday, and by Monday experienced dizziness. He sought medical attention at a private hospital and was clinically diagnosed with influenza A, complicated by shock, and was in serious condition. The Centre for Health Protection has dispatched personnel to inspect the school and conduct medical surveillance. Seven classmates in the same grade as the boy also tested positive for influenza A, but their conditions were mild and did not require hospitalization.
