The US has produced rare earth magnets domestically for the first time in 25 years.
During a visit to eVAC Magnetics' newly built rare earth magnet processing centre in South Carolina, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said rare earth magnets are key components in nearly all modern products.
He said the launch of the plant meant that the US has achieved independent production in the field of rare earth magnets, breaking China's monopoly in this area.
He predicted the US manufacturing sector to take off over the next two years.
After the Chinese and US presidents meeting in Busan, South Korea, China suspended its rare earth export controls for one year.
The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, reported that China plans to establish a mechanism that differentiates export recipients so that the US military supply chain cannot obtain key raw materials.
