The Foreign Ministry said it had lodged serious representations and protests to Japan over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks about Taiwan, urging Tokyo to stop meddling in China's internal affairs. Takaichi recently told Japanese lawmakers that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could be a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, the Kyodo news agency reported. The ministry also defended its representative in Osaka, who posted seemingly threatening remarks online aimed at Takaichi. It started on Friday when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in parliament that if Beijing were to use force against Taiwan, it would constitute an existential threat to Japan and give Tokyo the right to exercise self-defence. It prompted China's Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, to respond with a strong social media post, saying: "We have no choice but to cut off that dirty neck that has lunged at us without a moment's hesitation." Earlier on Monday, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said they had complained to China of Xue's "extremely inappropriate" remarks, which the US characterised as threatening, demanding the post be deleted. The post was indeed later taken down but Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian hit out at Japan, accusing Tokyo of trying to deflect attention from Takaichi's Friday' comments. "This grossly interferes in China's internal affairs, seriously violates the one-China principle, the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, and the basic norms governing international relations," said Lin. "It also runs counter to the political commitments made by the Japanese government so far, with an extremely egregious nature and consequences. "China strongly deplores and firmly opposes this and has lodged solemn complaints and protests with Japan." When asked about Xue's online remarks, Lin said: "The personal post made by the Chinese diplomat in Japan was directed at the erroneous and dangerous remarks that attempt to separate Taiwan from China's territory and advocate military intervention in the Taiwan Strait. He added that Chinese diplomats have been the target of some extreme and threatening comments by right-wing elements in Japan and urged Tokyo to conduct investigations and curb such behaviour.
