The standby signal No. 1 was issued at 12.20p.m.
At noon, Typhoon Fung-wong was estimated to be about 760 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong, and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.
According to the present forecast, Fung-wong will turn northwards gradually over the northeastern part of the South China Sea, and will be closest to Hong Kong between tomorrow night and Wednesday early hours.
Depending on the intensity change of the storm, its distance from Hong Kong, the impact of the northeast monsoon on the storm and local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the No.3 signal, or the Strong Monsoon signal.
