Super Typhoon Fung-wong, the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, started battering the country's northeastern coast ahead of landfall on Sunday. The storm knocked down power and forced the evacuation of nearly a million people prompting the defense chief to warn many others from high-risk villages to evacuate to safety before it was too late. Fung-wong approached the Philippines from the Pacific just as the country is still dealing with the devastation wrought by last Tuesday's Typhoon Kalmaegi which left at least 224 people dead in the central provinces. Fung-wong is reportedly the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year with its 1,600 kilometre wide rain and wind band big enough to cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of emergency due to the extensive damaged caused by Kalmaegi and the expected calamity from Fung-wong, which is called Uwan in the Philippines. The defense secretary who oversees the country's disaster response agencies and military warned the potential catastrophic impact of Fung-wong. He said it could affect a vast expanse of the country including Cebu and metropolitan Manila. The Office of Civil Defense said that more than 30 million people could be exposed to hazards posed by Fung-wong. The defense secretary asking that people follow orders by officials and to immediately move away from villages and towns prone to flash floods, landslides and coastal tidal surges. Fung-wong is expected to track northwestward and make landfall on the coast of Aurora or Isabela province later on Sunday or early Monday.
