Chaos at US airports as government shutdown affects flights

NBC News reports chaos at many US airports with more than a thousand flights cancelled and more than five thousand delays over the past 24 hours.

The numbers are expected to increase in the days ahead. 

The chaos is part of the FAA's mandate to cut back on air traffic because of the government shutdown causing air traffic controllers to work without pay.

This weekend only 4 percent of flights were affected but the number is expected to rise to over 10 percent this week.
