Free storage period for bodies in mortuary extended from 3 to 28 days

The government had earlier planned to implement mortuary fees starting from New Year's Day next year. However, in response to feedback from the public and stakeholders, the authorities have extended the free storage period for bodies from 3 days to 28 days.

Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau said the fee was not intended to increase revenue, and he believed that four weeks would be sufficient for bereaved families to arrange funerals.

The Hospital Authority recently announced that starting from New Year's Day, bodies could only be stored free of charge in hospital mortuaries for 3 days, which attracted public attention. Two days later, the authorities announced that the free storage period would be extended to 28 days.
