Typhoon Kalmaegi, one of the strongest in Asia this year, has made landfall north of Vietnam's Gia Lai province after leaving a trail of death and destruction in the Philippines. Authorities cautioned that violent gusts and heavy rain may lead to landslides and possible tornadoes. The super typhoon made landfall in Gia Lai at about 7:29 p.m. on Thursday local time. Officials say more than 260,000 residents in the central province were evacuated to safety. Winds packing speed of up to 92mph were hitting Vietnam's coastline. Tens of thousands of soldiers are on standby for rescue efforts as areas from Hue to Dak Lak are at risk of flooding and erosion. There have been reports of three fishermen who went missing after their boat was swept away by strong waves on Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai province. A search operation was launched. Six airports have been closed due to adverse weather which could affect hundreds of flights.
