US federal safety investigators have located the "black box" recorders from the wreckage of a UPS cargo plane that crashed in flames on takeoff from the airport at Louisville, Kentucky, killing at least 12 people.

The 34-year-old MD-11 freighter was bound for Honolulu with three crew members aboard when it crashed just after clearing a fence at the end of the runway during takeoff Tuesday evening. The plane was immediately engulfed in a fireball, igniting a string of blazes and scattering debris stretching about half a mile through an industrial corridor, including a petroleum recycling facility that was set ablaze and exploded.

Speaking to reporters, J. Todd Inman of the NTSB said they have located the plane's black box. "We have identified the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. This is what is commonly referred to as a black box. We have investigators now that have located it. As you can imagine, it's suffered some heat, not intrusion, but heat around it. These recorders are built for that."

This as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said they are moving from a rescue to recovery mode as they do not expect to find any one else alive. "There are a handful of other people that we're still searching for that we hope weren't on site and that we hear we're somewhere else. The other piece of news is we are moving from a rescue to a recovery mode. We do not expect to find anyone else alive in the area."

Those that died were 3 people on the plane the others were on the ground, as about 20 people were also injured.
