US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said that he would order a 10 percent cut in flights at 40 major US airports, citing air traffic control safety concerns as a government shutdown hits a record 37th day. US President Donald Trump blamed the government shutdown in part on GOP loses as Democrats scored major wins in elections nationwide this week and asked senators to bring the shutdown to an end. The Federal Aviation Administration or FAA said Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10 percent across 40 high-volume markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. The reduction stands to impact thousands of flights nationwide as the FAA directs more than 44,000 flights daily including commercial passenger, cargo and private flights. Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began on October 1st and staff shortages during some shifts have led to flight delays. Bryan Bedford, FAA administrator said: "We do recognise that the controllers have been working fastidiously for the past five weeks with this huge burden over their head of lack of compensation and we are starting to see some evidence that fatigue is building in the system in ways that we feel we need to work towards relieving some of that pressure." Speaking to Republican Senators at a White House breakfast on the first anniversary of his election victory, President Trump had to address the major wins by the Democrats blaming the government shutdown in part for GOP losses and demanding the Senate to end the filibuster. US President Donald Trump said: "Last night, it was not expected to be a victory. It was very Democrat areas. But I don't think it was good for Republicans, I don't think it was good. I'm not sure it was good for anybody. But we had an interesting evening and we learned a lot. If you read the pollsters, the shutdown was a big factor, negative for the Republicans, and that was a big factor. It's time for Republicans to do what they have to do and that's terminate the filibuster. It's the only way you can do it. And if you don't terminate the filibuster, you'll be in bad shape. We won't pass any legislation."
