Two years after the discovery of the JPEX crytocurrency exchange fraud case, police have filed charges against 16 people, including Joseph Lam Chok, for conspiracy to defraud and other offenses.

The case was brought to court this morning.

Four of the defendants, including Lam and online personality Chan Yee, were transported by police vehicle from North Point Police Station to the Eastern Magistrates' Courts. They are variously charged with conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and perverting the course of justice.

One influencer, Chu Ka-fai, is suspected of handling about HK$12 million through ZA Bank. He was granted bail with a cash amount of HK$100,000, must surrender all travel documents, is prohibited from leaving Hong Kong, and the case is adjourned to January 2 next year.

The incident dates back to September 2023, when the Securities and Futures Commission stated that JPEX had not applied for the relevant licenses to operate in Hong Kong, yet was actively promoting its services.

Its business practices were also deemed suspicious and involved fraud.
