Plane crash at Kentucky airport kills at least 7 and injures 11

At least 7 people were killed and 11 injured when a  UPS cargo plane crashed and exploded in a massive fireball while taking off from the company's global aviation hub adjacent to Louisville International Airport in Kentucky.

The plane was departing for Honolulu at the time of the crash Tuesday. Video of a UPS cargo plane with three people aboard igniting on the runway. Flames on the planes left wing and a trail of smoke.

"Hold on, hold on, hold on. I think it's going to crash bro." Then a large explosion sending thick black smoke into the air.

Another motorist capturing this video of the explosion from the highway leading to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, where UPS Worldport hub is located. Huge plumes of thick black smoke rising from the crash site.

Seven people were killed - 3 of whom were onboard the plane and 11 hurt, some with "very significant"  injuries in the crash Tuesday evening, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

Andy Beshear, Kentucky Governor said: "Approximately 5.14 pm Eastern Time tonight, UPS flight 2976 from Louisville, Kentucky to Honolulu, Hawaii, an MD 11 with three crew members on board was involved in a catastrophic crash here in Louisville adjacent to our airport. At this time we've got some initial numbers, but let me tell you I expect them to grow. Right now we believe we have at least three fatalities. But I believe that number is going to get larger. We have at least 11 injuries some of the very significant that are being treated by local hospitals."

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg says the National Transportation Safety Board is handling the investigation and sending 28 people.

UPS's largest handling facility is in Louisville and the company announced Tuesday night it had halted package sorting at the centre and didn't say when it would resume.
