A worker died of his injuries after an ancient Rome tower collapsed.

Sixty-year-old Romanian Octav Stoici was pulled from the rubble after being trapped for twelve hours but died on his way to hospital.

A medieval tower that had stood for eight centuries begins to crack and crumble.

On a clear morning in Rome just before lunchtime, dust fills the road near the Colosseum and rises up into the sky.

Five conservation construction workers were inside the Torre der Conti trying to make sure the vacant tower remained upright.

Suddenly, it had started to fall.

Three were pulled out with small injuries, a fourth freed needed hospital treatment but a seriously wounded and more difficult to reach male victim remained.

As emergency crews worked intensely to free the man trapped inside, attention switched to the far side of the twenty-nine-metre-high structure as the camera focussed on the sound of more cracking, as a second collapse became much more dangerous.

Firefighters forced to pullback as another part of the tower came down.

None of the rescue crew were injured but had no choice but to pause and assess as more dust and debris filled the area.

Witness Romano says first the outside staircase went, now he says he could see that the roof and the floors were not there anymore.

"There was one in a diagonal way and the second one was like the inside of the tower. And it collapsed like, straight," Queen Padliniwan, an ice cream shop worker, said.

Tourists who had stopped to watch the story unfold wiht a drink from across the street filmed the second collapse from another vantage point.

Florian Sadiki from Germany says: "It suddenly collapsed again, because this was the second time and the first time it was already all closed up and I don't think they were expecting something more.

Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri was on the scene as the evacuation operation was able to continue.

Officials said contact had been made with the injured man inside and he was responsive, speaking to them as they worked to free him.

They had to mitigate the risks to rescuers as the recovery resumed slowly.

Using a tube to suck out the rubble in a bid to get to the trapped man, named as Romanian Octav Stoici.

AP reporter Trisha Thomas at the scene said at the time: "This tower is between Rome's Colosseum and the Roman Forum, where hundreds of tourists pass every day. There were a lot of tourists nearby at the time who witnessed the event and have been watching all day, as they struggle to get this worker out."

At eleven pm, the worker was rescued and taken down from the tower.

The effort by firefighters initially described as an exceptional feat.

The sixty- six year-old placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

Unfortunately, the story does not have a happy ending.

Although four colleagues were saved, the rescued man's heart stopped in the emergency vehicle on his way to the hospital and medics were unable to revive him as Stoici sadly passed away.
