The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court has delivered its first-instance verdict against the Baijia crime clan -- one of the four major criminal families operating in northern Myanmar having involved in cross-border telecoms fraud. Five members, its ringleader, have been sentenced to death. Authorities say the syndicate's activities were linked to around 29 billion yuan in illicit proceeds, and resulted in the deaths of six Chinese citizens. The crimes of their criminal gang have resulted in the deaths of six Chinese nationals, one Chinese national's suicide, and injuries to several others, In total, 21 defendants stood trial. Apart from the five defendants who received death sentences, two others received death sentences with a two-year reprieve and five members handed life imprisonment, with the remaining nine being sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison.
