Georgia released frees British teen held over drugs smuggling

A pregnant British teenager has been freed from jail in Georgia despite admitting smuggling marijuana and hashish into the country.

Nineteen-year-old Bella May Culley was only told on the day that she'd be released having been imprisoned since May.

She looked overwhelmed as she stepped out of court in Tbilisi, joined by her mother, who has campaigned for her release.

Facing a twenty-year sentence, she pleaded guilty although earlier Culley claimed she was forced to carry the drugs while in Thailand.

After serving time in prison, and after her family reached a financial settlement with prosecutors her passport will be returned and she's free to leave.

Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalurgelashvili said: "The charge carries a sentence of 20 years, or life imprisonment. After the accused confessed to the crime and cooperated with the prosecution, and in agreement with the defence, we reviewed the case, taking into account the confession of the accused, her age and her condition.The parties reached an agreement. Today, the plea agreement was approved, the accused was sentenced to 5 months and 24 days of imprisonment and fined one hundred and eighty-four thousand US dollars.
