Locals release cats near Qingyuan city reservoir, sparking animal cruelty concerns

A video posted on mainland social media showed crowds releasing multiple cats near the Yingzui water reservoir in Guangdong Province's Qingyuan city. 

Several of the felines were seen entering the water.

The footage shows a group of people chanting Buddhist prayers and freeing the cats from their cages, with many of the frightened animals subsequently dashing towards the reservoir.

A number of the cats remained on land while others jumped into the water in a state a panic.

Several locals entered the reservoir in hopes of saving the animals.

The incident raised concerns among the mainland public about animal cruelty and such practices possibly contaminating the water. 

Local authorities have begun an investigation and have not discovered any drowned cats as of now.
