Last year, Hong Kong's Chinese University launched a four-year DNA testing programme to screen 9,000 people at risk of diabetes, identifying high-risk groups likely to develop early-onset diabetes over the next decade.

The programme targets people aged 18 to 44 who have not been diagnosed with diabetes but have at least one risk factor, such as obesity or a family history.

Participants undergo a saliva-based DNA test. By combining genetic markers and other factors, the programme will identify high-risk individuals with a genetic predisposition to diabetes, the arrange further urine and blood tests to help them prevent or delay the onset of diabetes at an early stage.
