Thousands gathered on the banks of the River Danube in Serbia to mark the one year anniversary of a deadly train station disaster which has evolved into wider protests over the government in Belgrade.

Huge numbers turned out to remember the dead as lanterns were released into the night sky.

Sixteen people died when a concrete canopy collapsed at the station in Novi Sad a year ago.

There was sixteen minutes of silence and as that took place people lit the torches of their mobile phones in a show of emotion and defiance.

This town in the north of Serbia was also sending a message to hardline President Aleksandar Vucic.

Many of these people blame his government for the disaster, claiming widespread corruption and nepotism for failures in state infrastructure .

Many of the projects were carried out with Chinese help.

No one has been held accountable for the disaster last winter.

The tragedy triggered youth-led protests demanding political change.
