The Fire Services Department held the launching ceremony of its Winter Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Promotional Month earlier today in a bid to spread fire safety awareness to the community.
Many may panic once hearing a fire alarm resulting in serious or even fatal mistakes.
With Hong Kong stepping into a cooler and drier season in November, the Fire Services Department launched its promotional month targeting this season to increase the public's fire safety knowledge.
A variety of methods to combat blazes were taught at the event.
While temporary measures for residents who fail to evacuate in time were also demonstrated, such as taping up and placing a wet towel at the bottom of the front door, as well as the installation of smoke detectors.
Residents could also try putting on special attire.
The Fire Services Department recommends residents to purchase these fire escape hoods, which are available online, to prepare for possible fires.
Users simply have to remove this plug before placing it tightly on their heads.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Fire Services Wong Ka-wing addressed a recent fire caused by an electric car in the Laguna City housing estate.
He said Fire Services personnel are equipped with some of the most advanced hardware to tackle fires including a fire blanket specifically made to put out blazes caused by electric cars.
Regarding the cause of eruption, Wong said lithium batteries overheating are usually the cause of electric car fires, and reminded residents to stay calm in such situations and evacuate to a safe location.
