In a statement concluding his trip to the APEC summit in South Korea, Chief Executive John Lee said the occasion allowed him to strengthen ties with several participating countries and that he strived for the city's membership in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, also known as RCEP. This as the CE also reported the latest developments in the SAR to President Xi Jinping. Having earlier participated in the APEC leaders' informal meeting at the summit in Gyeongju, Chief Executive John Lee spoke about his reports on the city to President Xi Jinping over the course of his stay in South Korea. He said President Xi cares deeply about the SAR and that the president discussed with him geopolitical issues that the nation currently faces. He added that throughout the summit, he met leaders of various economic bodies and held talks with them on matters surrounding international cooperation. When asked whether he talked about the upcoming Legislative Council election during the summit, the CE said he did not bring up the topic due to time constraint. Lee highlighted his meetings with a number of ASEAN leaders during his time in the South Korean city, and urged them to support Hong Kong's membership in RCEP. The CE said most of the leaders he approached showed support for the city's membership in the economic body. Meanwhile, with next year's APEC summit set to take place in Shenzhen, Lee felt encouraged by the arrangement and stressed Hong Kong's full support for its neighbouring city and the nation as a whole.
