President Xi announces Shenzhen will host 2026 APEC summit

President Xi Jinping has urged Asia-Pacific economies to enhance cooperation which he said would be mutually beneficial. Speaking in South Korea Saturday, Xi outlined a three point proposal in which the economies could work together. The points outlined include making good use of new opportunities, standing up to new challenges and forging a sustainable, brighter future together.

Leaders of 21 Asian and Pacific Rim nations met in the South Korean city of Gyeongju for this year's APEC or Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

President Xi focused on his three-point plan for the region. Firstly, urging the Asia-Pacific economies to further unleash the potential of digital and smart development to give the region a fresh edge in innovation-driven development. 

The proposal stated the economies should fully harness new technologies to empower and propel them forward bearing in mind the well-being of humanity, and promote the sound and orderly development of AI or artificial intelligence, adding China is ready to work with APEC members to enhance AI literacy and bridge the digital and AI divide in the region.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung saying his country is establishing an Asia-Pacific AI Centre which aims to promote the exchange of AI policies and bridge the AI gap.

Secondly, Xi called on Asia Pacific economies to stay committed to green and low carbon development to build a new paradigm for sustainable development. Adding the region should keep in mind future generations.

Thirdly, Xi called for building an inclusive and universally beneficial future to foster a new dynamism in the inclusive growth of the region calling the economies to always put the people first.

On Friday night, K-pop stars and Korean artists were out in force to entertain the APEC leaders and their spouses at a dinner. K-pop star G-Dragon opened with, "Welcome to APEC." G-Dragon introducing himself in Korean as the official ambassador of APEC 2025 before entertaining the audience.

The Chinese city of Shenzhen will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November 2026. The announcement was made by President Xi Saturday.

He lauded the city as a miracle in the history of world development starting as a small backward fishing village into a modern international metropolis in just a few decades. It will be the third time China has hosted the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
