Sudan's paramilitary forces killed hundreds of people, including patients in a hospital, after they seized el-Fasher city in the western Darfur region over the weekend, according to the United Nations.

Displaced residents and aid workers described indiscriminate killings and rape by Rapid Support Forces soldiers looking to take over the country.

The World Health Organization said 460 patients and companions were killed at Saudi Maternity Hospital in el-Fasher. The RSF leader said an investigation has been launched.

Aerial photographs of the Saudi Maternity Hospital in el-Fasher, Sudan, hide the reported horrors that took place on the ground.

Footage shared by the governor of Darfur, Mini Minawi, allegedly shows bodies lying on the floor in pools of blood.

A fighter fires a single shot from a Kalashnikov-style rifle into a lone man sitting up, who then slumps to the floor.

Other bodies could be seen outside, though the Associated Press say it could not independently verify the date, location or conditions under which the video was recorded.

UNICEF representative Sheldon Yett, inside Sudan, describes a massive humanitarian crisis in el-Fasher.

"The situation is horrific," he said. "Here we have a city that had been under siege for 600 days, no food could get in, no medicine could get in, none of the basics of that commodities that children need could get in, and now we have the same residents are subject to the most horrific violence, most acute violence, so is absolutely horrific."

Protesters gathered in front of Downing Street in London to show solidarity with Sudanese, the conflict having cost some 40,000 lives so far.

They are calling for a boycott of the United Arab Emirates, who they accuse of backing the RSF. The UAE has denied the allegations.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, said he was "appalled and deeply shocked" by the reports.

The Sudan Doctors Network, a medical group tracking the war, said RSF fighters "cold-bloodedly killed everyone they found inside the Saudi Hospital, including patients, their companions, and anyone else present in the wards".

RSF commander General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo on Wednesday issued a statement on Telegram acknowledging "abuses" by his forces.

"There are violations that happened in el-Fasher," he said. Adding: "From here, we are announcing the formation of an investigation committee, and the announcement is not only talk. An investigation committee should start immediately to hold any soldier or officer who committed a crime or crossed their limits towards any human accountable."
