Some academics believe China-US meeting signals short-term trade thaw -- but risks remain, as both sides still diverge on core interests.

While Xi Jinping and Donald Trump made progress in areas including soybean purchases, rare earths and tariffs, some scholars believe lasting improvement in ties is unlikely.

Lau Siu-kai, a consultant of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, says China's rare earth control is a powerful lever, impacting US manufacturing and defence industries.

This forces Washington to seek solutions with China. However, the long-term outlook remains gloomy.

The US will not export cutting-edge technology especially semiconductor manufacturing and design, while China will not make major concessions on rare earths.

With the measures announced this time lasting only one year before review -- their rivalry is likely here to stay, Lau says.

Billy Mak from Baptist University says as Washington drops levies on Chinese goods, China could pick up growth momentum.

He believes Hong Kong's logistics sector will benefit as cross-border trade recovers, though growth might not return to 2018 levels.
