President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, have wrapped up their meeting in Busan, South Korea, that lasted more than one and a half hours.

According to state media reports, Xi said both sides have reached consensus on trade issues and that he's ready to build a solid foundation for bilateral ties.

Trump also announced lower tariffs on Chinese imports and said he could sign a trade deal with China "pretty soon."

The highly-anticipated sit-down between the presidents of China and the United States has been a long time coming.

It's their first face-to-face meeting since Trump's return to the White House and is expected to mark a breakthrough towards soothing tensions flared up by Trump's trade salvo.

Xi and Trump shook hands before the meeting began at Gimhae airbase in the South Korean port city of Busan this morning.

Xi said under their joint guidance, the Sino-U.S. relations have remained stable on the whole.

He told Trump the two countries should be "partners and friends" and "stay on the right course."

Xi also mentioned the good momentum in his country's economic development, and said Beijing has the confidence and capacity to navigate all kinds of risks and challenges.

He helmed business relationship as the anchor and driving force for their relations, adding that dialogue is better than confrontation.

Trump said: "It's a great honour to be with a friend of mine, really for a long time now, if you think about it, the very, very distinguished and respected president of China. And we will be having some discussions. I think we've already agreed to a lot of things, and we'll agree to some more right now. But President Xi (Jinping) is a great leader of a great country, and I think we're going to have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time."

Trump said afterwards that the US would reduce fentanyl-related tariffs implemented earlier this year from 20 percent to 10 percent, bringing the total tariff rate on China from 57 percent to 47 percent.

He claimed that China would end restrictions on rare earth exports and resume purchases of American soybeans though it has not been confirmed by Beijing.

Trump also said that he would go to China in April next year and Xi would come to the U.S. "some time after that."

The meeting took place on the sidelines of this year's APEC summit in Gyeongju.

President Xi will stay in South Korea until Saturday to attend the leaders' meeting and also pay a state visit to the country.
