Xi and Trump begin talks on trade deal

President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump have begun talks that could end the trade war between China and the US. 

At the start of the meeting in Busan, South Korea, Trump said he expects "a very successful meeting" with Xi and that both sides "have always had a good relationship."

Xi said he had spoken on the phone with Trump three times since the latter's re-election and exchanged letters. 

"It is normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then", said Xi, adding that both countries should "stay the right course."

Xi noted that Trump has been "very enthusiastic" about engaging in difficult regional issues, adding that he appreicates the US President's "great contribution" to the recent conclusion of the Gaza casefire agreement. 

The meeting is expected to last around three hours which started at around 10a.m. Hong Kong time.
