Several regions in Japan continue to report bear sightings with at least 11 people killed in bear attacks. Japan's self-defense forces have been deployed to Akita Prefecture to provide support, with authorities considering hiring temporary hunters. Footage released by NHK shows a bear wandering through farmland in Akita in northeastern Honshu as locals set up iron cages and carried rifles. Since April, at least two people in Akita have been killed and more than 50 injured in bear attacks. In Iwate Prefecture, a bear stayed in a bank's parking lot for more than three hours. Japan is home to more than 40,000 Asiatic black bears and Hokkaido has over 10,000 brown bears -- which are larger in size. Experts say a recently killed bear was found with very little body fat, suggesting food shortages in the mountains. Combined with climate change shortening hibernation periods, bears are expected to continue foraging outside forests.
