Nominations for the Legislative Council election are underway. Chief Executive John Lee said authorities will resolutely prevent and crack down on any interference or disruption of the election. He added a letter will be sent to urge civil servants to vote. Following earlier comments by the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR which emphasised that interference and disruption in the Legislative Council election is unacceptable, Chief Executive John Lee made the comments before attending the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday morning. Lee mentioned there are signs that anti-China and Hong Kong-disrupting elements and external forces are spreading rumours and disrupting the new electoral system, and stressed that illegal activities will be severely punished in accordance with the law. Lee said: "The Legislative Council election concerns the constitutional order of Hong Kong, national security, and good governance in the SAR. The central government's concern and attention are only natural." "Opposition forces and soft confrontation are attempting to smear this legitimate attention and concern as interference." "Normal personnel changes have been deliberately distorted, and various so-called restriction and blessing lists have been fabricated to smear the new electoral system. The SAR government must speak out forcefully and condemn these actions."
