The first locally-originated case of chikungunya recorded in Hong Kong was reported yesterday, involving an 82-year-old woman living in Fung Tak Estate in Diamond Hill. Chikungunya can cause fever and severe joint pains. Other common symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and a rash. Symptoms generally last or several days, and most patients can make a full recovery. However, joint pain in some cases may persist for months or even years. In rare cases, the virus can lead to serious complications involving the eyes, heart and nervous systems. Newborns, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses are at higher risk, although severe cases and deaths are very rare.
