Starry Lee: LegCo farewell motion cancelled amid election fairness concerns

After calling off the farewell luncheon for lawmakers, Legislative Council House Committee Chairperson Starry Lee announces that she has decided to withdraw the motion for a farewell debate, originally expected to be moved at tomorrow's meeting.
Lee says several lawmakers had earlier expressed concern that holding the debate so close to the October 24th nomination period next Friday could be seen as unfair to election candidates.
Lee said the decision was made to also allow members more time to prepare for the coming poll.
She added that each legislative term faces unique circumstances, and decisions must take into account the broader social environment.
In recent days, several veteran lawmakers have announced that they will not seek re-elections including Tommy Cheung, Chan Kin-por and Jeffrey Lam.
