Firefighters battled a fire that broke out in bamboo scaffolding on the Chinachem Tower in Central.
The Fire Department told reporters the rapidly spreading fire mainly raged on the exterior of the building, while the units inside were not severely impacted.
A specialist team will be set up to look into the cause.
Police received multiple reports at around half past four that a blaze ripped through the high-rise building at 34-37 Connaught Road, Central.
Online footage showed bright orange flames engulfed the entire scaffolding, sending dense black smoke that could be seen at the East Coast Park kilometres away.
An injured person rescued from the scene had to wear a breathing mask.
A witness surnamed Wong said he wondered what had happened as he came over and saw rubbish that emitted a disagreeable smell.
The whole building was on fire, he said, adding black ashes were dropping all over the place from above.
Mr. Sin is one of the over 50 people evacuated from the building. He said he was told to get down from the 16th floor and their view had been blocked by the heavy smoke.
The Fire Brigade used hoses and mobilised breathing apparatus teams to tackle the fire, which was later upgraded to a No. 3 alarm at 4:36 p.m.
It was quickly brought under control, but crews worked to prevent it from flaring up again, stretching fire truck ladders and spraying water onto the scaffolding.
Burnt bamboos were seen scattered on Pottinger Street nearby.
Some sections of the Connaught Road from Central to Sheung Wan, as well as Des Voeux Road Central were fully closed. Tram services to and from Central were impeded by the incident.
Officers from the Fire Department said in a press conference this evening that they managed to put out the fire at about 9:13 p.m.
A total of three men and one woman had been sent to hospital for treatment, one of them was in critical condition.
