Outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday sent a ritual offering to Tokyo's war-linked Yasukuni Shrine.
And Sanae Takaichi, President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, made a monetary offering instead of making a visit.
Takaichi could succeed Ishiba as Japanese Prime Minister.
Beijing has lodged a solemn protest over Japan's moves.
The shrine, located in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, enshrines 14 Class A war criminals from World War II, including former Prime Minister Hideki Tojo.
Ishiba, who announced his resignation last month, sent a "masakaki" evergreen twigs offering to the shrine on the first day of its three-day autumn festival.
While current LDP leader Sanae Takaichi, who paid visits to the Yasukuni Shrine multiple times in the past, offered sacrificial expenses, reportedly considering the impact on diplomacy in the future.
