US federal judge orders halt to mass layoffs amid shutdown

A US federal judge in California ordered President Donald Trump's administration to stop mass layoffs of federal workers during the ongoing government shutdown.
Judge Susan Illston cited a series of public statements by Trump and other officials that she said showed explicit political motivations for the layoffs, such as Trump saying that cuts would target "Democrat agencies."
The judge said "you can't do that in a nation of laws," adding: "And we have laws here, and the things that are being articulated here are not within the law."
A renewed bid to pass a spending bill by the US senate failed again on Wednesday.
