Javier Milei, President of Argentina, visited the White House on Tuesday to meet with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump. A day earlier, Washington moved ahead with a 20 billion U.S. dollars bailout to prop up the Argentine peso.
Trump has defended the lifeline he's sending to Argentina, saying it was helping their neighbours and will help "a great philosophy take over a great country."
But the U.S. president made it clear that the economic support hinges on the political fortunes of Milei as his party faces a midterm legislative contest this month.
The libertarian's opponent was described by Trump as "extremely far-left."
Trump said the U.S. won't waste time to be generous to Argentina if Milei does not prevail and warned the Latin American country about doing business with China.
He said: "I don't think you should be doing business much. You can do some trade, but you certainly shouldn't be doing beyond that. Certainly shouldn't doing anything having to do with the military with China. And if that's what's happening, I'd be very upset about that, yeah."
